This one day seminar addresses the natural phenomena affecting land titles and boundaries. Natural phenomena, many times a natural disaster, and their effects on land boundaries and titles may result from earthquakes, glaciers, fires, volcanoes, floods, land subsidence, erosion by wind and water and general shifting of land and its boundaries. The seminar includes court decisions resolving some of these issues.

BIG Mistakes Made by Some Surveyors and Most Others

A little knowledge can be dangerous! This seminar focuses on those which often mislead people, sometimes even the knowledgeable, careful surveyor. Topics to be discussed: searching in the wrong places for information; believing all abutting properties extend to the center line of a road; trying to derive answers from inadequate research; accepting the wrong evidence, being misled by numbers and confusing adverse relationships with types of agreement.

Retracement Using Modern Tools

A discussion of the legal aspects and philosophies of retracement and the surveyor’s duty as well as the use of the internet to obtain materials: maps, photographs, satellite imagery, documents, and declination data. There will also be an analysis of field evidence, including sources of information and data and the use of GPS in retracement.
